Investment Focus

We invest in world-changing ideas. While we primarily focus on IT (web-enabled services, digital media, software), we have also invested in medical devices, cleantech, and beyond.  We seek companies that are poised to fundamentally revolutionize an industry – disrupting stodgy incumbents with game changing technology, a radically different economic model, or a value proposition that fundamentally changes the way customers behave.

We’re seed and early stage investors and prefer to be the first institutional capital into a company. That means we’ll frequently invest before a company is generating revenue. In select circumstances, a great team and nascent but compelling vision can be enough for us to get involved.

We’re long New York. We believe that New York has the right ecosystem to drive innovation. A wealth of passionate and driven people, an exceptional intellectual capital base, and great companies. Whether Midtown Manhattan or offroad in Upstate, we’re interested.

Investment Stages

Our initial investment into a company ranges from $50K to $500K and we maintain substantial reserves (up to $2MM) to support each company in the future.
We segment our investing activities into two categories:

Seed & Series A Investments

Our Seed and Series A investments represent the core of our investing activity. These investments typically range from $300K to $500K as part of a $1MM-3MM investment round, which we can either lead or co-invest alongside other angel investors and VCs. We also typically participate in follow-on rounds for these investments, investing up to $2.5MM in any one company. We will occasionally make a solo seed investment, but prefer to partner. We like to lead deals, but we don’t always need to lead. Most importantly, we work with entrepreneurs to help construct the syndicate that best suits their needs.

Seedlet Investments

Our Seedlet program is a response to what we think is an unhealthy evolution of the Seed market in recent years. Too many funds are chasing returns in the seed market, and companies that we think should be raising six figure rounds are suddenly raising $2MM “seed rounds.” Our Seedlet investments are right-sized for the needs of the most exciting and earliest opportunities. These investments help entrepreneurs quickly access capital while utilizing High Peaks’ resources to take initial steps towards product development or launch into a new market and typically range from $50K to $150K as part of a total investment of up to $500K, but can be as small as $25K in some cases. Our decision to make a Seedlet investment can be made very rapidly, enabling entrepreneurs to focus their time and energy on building their businesses.
